1. Best Netflix Family Movie – The Bad Guys
The Bad Guys are the type of heist film with a heavy dose of style while still being suitable enough for kids. The animated adventure is based on popular children’s books, where anthropomorphic predator animals live a life of thievery. But when the gang’s leader Mr. Wolf has an epiphany about the tenants of being a good boy, his priorities shift for him and his eccentric crew of animal criminal masterminds. This fast-paced animated comedy takes great inspiration from heist films like Ocean’s Eleven and The Castle of Cagliostro, with a voice cast that includes Sam Rockwell, Marc Maron, Awkwafina, Craig Robinson, Anthony Ramos, Richard Ayoade, Zazie Beetz, Alex Borstein, and Lilly Singh.
2. The Mitchells vs The Machines
There’s just about something for everybody in The Mitchells vs. The Machines. This animated adventure starts with a family road trip to college and ends with the Mitchell family saving the world from robots. The journey is complete with plenty of vibrant action set pieces as well as perfectly-timed hilarity, thanks to the direction of Michael Rianda. Aside from being a fun premise, the animation itself is loaded with such clever experimentation that looks more unique than any other CGI animated film out there. The voice cast includes Abbi Jacobson, Danny McBride, Maya Rudolph, Mike Rianda, Eric André, Olivia Colman, Fred Armisen, Beck Bennett, Chrissy Teigen, John Legend, Charlyne Yi, Blake Griffin, Conan O’Brien, and Doug the Pug.
3. Missing Link
From the Laika Animation studio (Paranorman, Coraline) comes this charming tale of exploration and friendship. Sir Lionel Frost seeks to prove himself to his society of explorers by tracking down the legendary missing link creature. When Frost finds the monster who goes by the name Mr. Link, he’s surprised that the creature is very refined and kind. Won over by the creature’s way with words, the two venture off to Shangri-La to find Link’s missing family. The film has lots of excitement and stunning stop-motion animation with a voice cast that includes Hugh Jackman, Zoe Saldana, David Walliams, Stephen Fry, Matt Lucas, Timothy Olyphant, Amrita Acharia, Emma Thompson, and Zach Galifianakis.
4. Paddington
It’s hard not to be instantly warmed by the well-meaning comedy of Paddington. Based on the popular children’s book series, Paddington tells the tale of a talking bear trying to get used to London. He manages to talk his way into residing with the Brown family, learning everything about city life. What he doesn’t count on is being hunted by a crazed taxidermist. There’s a lot of cuteness to this story but also plenty of slapstick sequences that will delight audiences of many ages. The film features Ben Whishaw as Paddington and Hugh Bonneville, Sally Hawkins, Julie Walters, Jim Broadbent, and Peter Capaldi as the humans.
5. My Father’s Dragon
This latest film from the award-nominated Cartoon Saloon (Wolfwalkers, Song of the Sea) is a breathtakingly beautiful film of adventure and fantasy. Elmer is finding it hard to get along in a new place and decides to take on a quest to seek out a legendary dragon. When he finds this dragon, a new friendship forms amid an adventure of all sorts of fantastical beasts. Portrayed in stunning 2D animation, the film features the voices of Jacob Tremblay, Gaten Matarazzo, Golshifteh Farahani, Dianne Wiest, Rita Moreno, Chris O’Dowd, Judy Greer, Alan Cumming, Yara Shahidi, Jackie Earle Haley, Whoopi Goldberg, and Ian McShane.
6. Goosebumps
Based on the iconic horror book series for kids, Goosebumps is a playfully meta-comedy centering around the book’s author, RL Stein. When Stein’s new neighbors sneak into his house, they accidentally unlock a cursed book of all his ideas. Now the familiar Goosebumps characters are running amok in suburbia, bringing eccentric terror to the community. Cleverly written and exciting to watch, the film is a delight for those who grew up with the books or experiencing them for the first time. The comedic cast includes Jack Black, Dylan Minnette, Odeya Rush, Amy Ryan, Ryan Lee, and Jillian Bell.
7. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs
Based on the kid’s book of the same title, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs is a fast-paced foodie adventure with laughs as big as the food. The film centers around a remote island community that is facing a tourism crisis. Flint Lockwood, a local scientist, finds the cure for this dull town by crafting a device that makes food rain down from the skies. This latest invention turns the island into a haven of tasty delights that continue to grow in size, ultimately leading to a food fight of a climax where the food eats you. Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (21 Jump Street), this eccentric animated comedy features the voices of Bill Hader, Anna Faris, James Caan, Andy Samberg, Bruce Campbell, Mr. T, Bobb’e J. Thompson, Benjamin Bratt, Neil Patrick Harris, Al Roker, Lauren Graham, and Will Forte.
8. The Sea Beast
Chris Williams of Disney fame directed this sleeper Netflix animated hit. The Sea Beast takes place in an age of pirates and monster hunters. The seas become a dangerous place for sailors, let alone a little girl with dreams of infamy. The two unlikely partners join forces to explore the sea’s most dangerous creatures. What they find, however, is that monsters are more than they seem beyond their towering size. Visually dazzling and carrying a strong message about class and friendship, this animated adventure features a voice cast that includes Karl Urban, Zaris-Angel Hator, Jared Harris, and Marianne Jean-Baptiste.
9. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
If the kids are craving action but are too young for lots of explosions, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles remains an exciting spectacle since its debut in the 1990s. Based on the comic book and cartoon series, this live-action interpretation features the four mutant turtles trying to stop New York’s crime wave of the mysterious Footclan. Well, when they’re not eating pizza and cracking pop culture jokes. The film is a lot of fun if not for the wry humor than for the incredible costumes of the turtles crafted by the Jim Henson Workshop.
10. Shaun the Sheep: Farmageddon
Based on the popular kid’s stop-motion series, Farmageddon places the comical sheep in a sci-fi situation of helping an alien find his way back home. With little to no dialogue, this film is perfect for the young ones but also has so many sly science fiction movie references woven into the visual gags that adults will get a kick out of it as well. It’s the same charming humor that most audiences have come to expect from the Aardman Animation Studio, responsible for the Wallace & Gromit shorts.
